CFRP-Hydraulic cylinder gets ahead

How the Lingk & Sturzebecher
drive has developed

STUHR (gf) - Scarcely two years have passed since Lingk & Sturzebecher presented the new concept of a high-performance hydro-cylinder in ultra-lightweight design. How has this widely praised innovation developed in the meantime?
Dr. Carsten H. Müller, CEO of L&S, tells the story.

A brief introduction: What particular features can the high-performance hydraulic cylinder in its ultra-lightweight design offer?
The CFRP-cylinder differs considerably from usual hydraulic cylinders made from steel due to its extraordinary low weight and high-pressure capacity along with a comparatively compact design. Thereby, the light-weight cylinder is distinguished by an extremely high actuating power-to-weight ratio which conventional steel cylinders cannot achieve by far. An essential feature of our high-pressure hydraulic cylinder with tie rods is its ultra-lightweight, heterogeneous multiple-layer compound tube made from spacetravel-tested carbon fiber plastics (CFRP).

In what way have sales developed since the initial presentation at the Hanover trade fair in 1996?

Dr. Carsten Müller:
"We are working on
further weight reduction
of our cylinders."
We can certainly be very satisfied. Growth of the new business field "CFRP-Lightweight- Cylinder" is clearly exceeding our expectations. Weight related assets of the hydrocylinders have been widely utilized by large-scale industry as well as small and medium enterprises and transferred into corresponding economical benefits. Already more than 100 tailor-made CFRP-cylinders are in operation at various mobile and stationary facilities.
